After the 12:05 PM Mass for the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, we will hold Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The devotion is moved to Wednesday because Monsignor Routhier will celebrate the funeral Mass of Gloria Meyers at 1:30 PM Friday, and will not have time for Adoration on the First Friday.
Cathedral parishioner and musician Attorney Norm Smith will give a talk Thursday, June 30 at 7:00 PM at St. Mark’s Church on North Avenue in Burlington on the dangers of Proposal 5/Article 22, which seeks to amend the state constitution. Norm also is a board member of Vermonters for Good Government. Vermont voters will decide in this year’s November election whether to add this article to the state document. Article 22 aims to protect abortion but Norm has written about and will argue that if approved, this proposal may fail in this goal and create new problems around health law. Article 22 reads: “an individual’s right to personal reproductive autonomy is central to the liberty and dignity to determine one’s own life course and shall not be denied or infringed unless justified by a compelling State interest achieved by the least restrictive means.”
Samer Awwad, from the nonprofit organization Bethlehem Christian families, will speak at the Cathedral about the religious crisis in the Middle East and sell items from the Holy Land after weekend Masses, Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26. The group will offer crucifixes, rosaries and artwork at the back of the upstairs church or in the parish hall.
Msgr. Routhier will celebrate 9:00 AM Mass at New Mount Calvary Cemetery on Plattsburgh Avenue, Burlington for the Fourth of July. In case of inclement weather, Mass will be downstairs in the Cathedral Chapel. There will not be 11:30 confessions or a 12:05 Mass. The parish office is closed for the Holiday.
The Knights of Columbus will collect non-perishable food next Saturday at the Cathedral and at St. Mark's Church on North Avenue from 9:00 - 11:00 AM. Donations will stock the North End Food Pantry on North Avenue.
The Burlington Diocese Tuesday June 7 will honor diocesan priests celebrating important anniversaries of their ordination to Holy Orders. Mass begins at 11:00 AM at St. John Vianney Church in South Burlington. The public is welcome to attend. The church lot has plenty of easy parking.
Today we complete the Redemption with the descent of the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, the Holy Spirit, upon the disciples and the Blessed Virgin, in Jerusalem, in the upper room where Jesus had celebrated the Passover. It is 50 days after Easter. Our priest wears red vestments. The Gospel tells the well-loved story of the great sound and wind of the Spirit’s descent, and the tongues of fire which came to rest over each disciple. The Spirit fired their faith and zeal, and they went out to teach and baptize, as bidden by their Lord, all but one of the 12 apostles, unto death. We also end the Easter season today, and tomorrow return to Ordinary, or numbered, Time, during the weekdays.
Our need for hygiene items is constant as we serve over 60 families every month. Many of our clients leave emptyhanded when hygiene supplies become depleted Often, families must decide between purchasing hygiene supplies or food. Every item donated is important. No donation is too small. Could you help replenish our supplies by dropping-off hygiene items to Joseph House? Every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated. Over the past several months, thanks to Mater Christi School’s Lenten Hygiene Supply Drive and Saint Catherine Parish in Shelburne’s donations, Joseph’s House has been able to provide many hygiene items to families in need. Many thanks to the families who participated in this much needed charitable act! God Bless you and thank you! Diana Charboneau, Director
